Welcome! This site was designed to provide information on the role of biomanufacturing and the impact it has on pharmaceutical drugs that are derived from plants. In the U.S. alone over half a million people die from cancer each year. Cancer is the second leading cause of death with over 200 types of known cancers.Thousand of plants were tested to find a treatment for cancer and several became standard chemotherapy for different forms of cancer. Out of the 35,000 plants the NCI researched that showed anticancer effects, only a small percent of the new drugs have yet been found to be safe and effective.
For information on the specific type of plants NCI researched that were found to have anticancer properties go to the Innovators tab, but first check out the Background tab to get an overview of the topic.
